Albemarle Corporation's (NYSE:ALB) P/S Is On The Mark

アルベマール社 (NYSE:ALB) のP/Sは適切です

Simply Wall St ·  01/09 22:28

It's not a stretch to say that Albemarle Corporation's (NYSE:ALB) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.6x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" for companies in the Chemicals industry in the United States, where the median P/S ratio is around 1.2x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

How Has Albemarle Performed Recently?

With revenue that's retreating more than the industry's average of late, Albemarle has been very sluggish. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to begin matching the rest of the industry, which has kept the P/S from declining. So while you could say the stock is cheap, investors will be looking for improvement before they see it as good value. Or at the very least, you'd be hoping it doesn't keep underperforming if your plan is to pick up some stock while it's not in favour.

Do Revenue Forecasts Match The P/S Ratio?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the industry for P/S ratios like Albemarle's to be considered reasonable.

In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 34%. However, a few very strong years before that means that it was still able to grow revenue by an impressive 96% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, while they would have preferred to keep the run going, shareholders would definitely welcome the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 6.6% per annum during the coming three years according to the analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 6.1% per annum, which is not materially different.

With this information, we can see why Albemarle is trading at a fairly similar P/S to the industry. It seems most investors are expecting to see average future growth and are only willing to pay a moderate amount for the stock.

The Bottom Line On Albemarle's P/S

Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.

A Albemarle's P/S seems about right to us given the knowledge that analysts are forecasting a revenue outlook that is similar to the Chemicals industry. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement or deterioration in revenue isn't great enough to push P/S in a higher or lower direction. All things considered, if the P/S and revenue estimates contain no major shocks, then it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future.
