Xiaomi (HKG: 1810, OTCMKTS: XIACY) founder, chairman and CEO Lei Jun had an interesting response to Tesla's (NASDAQ: TSLA) revamped Model Y, suggesting that its YU7, which will be launched in a few months, will be a strong rival.

Tesla launched the revamped Model Y in China today, and a WeChat post from the company was titled "Updated Model Y, (you can) compare anyway," suggesting that other models won't be able to match up to the crossover.

Lei, who has 25 million followers on Weibo, later shared a screenshot of a portion of the post on the social media platform, writing, "Ok."

Lei didn't comment further, but apparently he was suggesting that Xiaomi's YU7 SUV (sport utility vehicle) is more competitive in the face of the Model Y's refresh.

Xiaomi's car-making arm, Xiaomi EV, announced on December 9 that it had named its second EV model the YU7, and said the launch was expected to be in June or July 2025.

The company officially launched its first EV model, the SU7, on March 28, 2024, and more than 135,000 units of the electric sedan were delivered in 2024.

On the day Xiaomi first mentioned the YU7, the model entered a regulatory catalog from China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), bringing the core specs to light.

The YU7 measures 4,999 mm in length, 1,996 mm in width and 1,600 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,000 mm, according to its filing.

The Xiaomi model weighs 2,405 kg and supports a top speed of 253 km/h. It is powered by dual electric motors with peak power of 220 kW and 288 kW for the front and rear motors respectively.

For comparison, the facelifted Model Y measures 4,797 mm in length, 1,920 mm in width and 1,624 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,890 mm. The two variants weigh in at 1,921 kg and 1,992 kg, respectively.

The Model Y's lighter weight means it will likely consume less energy than the YU7.

The rear-wheel drive version of this Tesla SUV is powered by a battery pack with a capacity of 62.5 kWh and has a CLTC range of 593 kilometers.

The long-range all-wheel-drive version of the Model Y comes with a battery pack with a capacity of 78.4 kWh and has a CLTC range of 719 kilometers, which Tesla said is the longest-range Model Y in history.
