Toronto Stocks Climb; Lithium America Shares Rise on Bid for Millennial Lithium

Canadian stocks were higher midday Monday as health care, consumer discretionary and technology led the gainers while real estate lagged. Lithium Americas Corp. shares rose after it said it put in an offer for Millennial Lithium Corp.

At midday, Canada's S&P/TSX Composite Index was up 0.6% at 21172.23 and the blue-chip S&P/TSX 60 was 0.6% higher at 1272.98.

Lithium Americas shares were up 14% at C$4.57 after it said it made an offer of about US$400 million to acquire Millennial Lithium Corp., which is currently being pursued by China-based Contemporary Amperex Technology Co.

Other market movers:

Shares in LQwD FinTech Corp. were up by 11% to C$0.51 after it said it spent 4.5 million Canadian dollars, or around US$3.6 million, to acquire more bitcoin, bringing its total to around 133.

Frontera Energy Corp. climbed 4.8% to C$9.23 after it said it had acquired 45.1 million shares in CGX Energy Inc. for 76.3 million Canadian dollars, or roughly US$59.4 million, increasing its stake in the company.
