How to Trade US Fractional Shares

Keen to invest in your favorite US stocks or ETFs, but have insufficient capital?

Want to make your idle cash work for you but can't afford a full share of a stock?

Don't fret as moomoo's new feature has got you covered! With US fractional shares, you can gain exposure to these leading US companies with an initial investment of as little as US$5.

What are fractional shares?

Fractional shares allow you to own less than one whole share of a company, such as buying 0.1 or 0.2 shares.

Why fractional shares?

  1. Fractional shares allow for investment with lower starting capital, making them more accessible to individual investors. For example, as of January 30, 2024, the closing price for NVDA was $627.74 per share. If you only had $100 on that day, you could use it to purchase 0.16 shares of NVDA stock.

  2. Fractional shares make it easier to build a more diversified portfolio with less capital. For instance, you can divide $100 into four equal parts to purchase fractional shares, acquiring 0.13 shares of AAPL, 0.15 shares of AMZN, 0.06 shares of MSFT, and 0.13 shares of TSLA, thereby creating your own investment portfolio. (This is based on the closing prices as of January 30, 2024, with AAPL at $188.04, AMZN at $159.00, MSFT at $408.59, and TSLA at $191.59.)

There are a few things to note when trading fractional shares:

  1. Fractional trading hours are 9:30 am to 4:00 pm ET, or 9:30 am to 1:00 pm ET for half-day trading.

  2. The minimum buy order size for fractional trading is 0.0001 shares or US$5. Sell orders must be at least $0.01. Orders that do not meet the minimum order amount will be rejected.

  3. Only day orders are supported, and attached orders or short selling are not allowed.

  4. Certain securities may not be made available for Fractional Trading, and Moomoo reserves the right to modify the list of eligible securities at any time without notice to you.

  5. Please read and understand the important items that the SEC has indicated you should consider if you choose to trade fractional shares:https://www.sec.gov/oiea/investor-alerts-and-bulletins/fractional-share-investing-buying-slice-instead-whole-share#
