Pacific Investment Management (PIMCO) economist Tiffany Wilding said in a report after the Fed meeting that the possibility of a US recession is now like tossing a coin. The positive economic impacts of the pandemic, including high household savings, are being exhausted, and while this will prolong the delay in monetary policy's effectiveness, it will not eliminate these effects. The austerity policy is expected to remain unchanged for a longer period of time, and to slow economic activity over time. Historically, when interest rates rise so high and so fast to bring the inflation rate back to the target level of 2%, the economy has tended to fall into recession.
