Mullen Automotive has submitted an updated plan to the U.S. Department of Energy for a $55 million grant funding opportunity in domestic battery materials processing. The company plans to establish battery manufacturing operations at its Mishawaka, Indiana facility with a capacity of 108,000 battery systems (1 gigawatt-hour) annually, while designating its Fullerton, California site for R&D and solid-state prototype production.The company has already invested $12 million in battery development and manufacturing, committing an additional $43 million for U.S. production expansion. The plan includes strategic acquisitions from Romeo Power and Nikola for battery pack production. Production is scheduled to begin in mid-2025, with two additional production lines planned for launch in the following years.The initiative aligns with the DOE's $3.5 billion Bipartisan Infrastructure Law program announced in November 2023, aimed at boosting domestic advanced battery production. Mullen's Mishawaka facility, formerly a GM Hummer and AM General manufacturing site, will be revitalized to serve as the primary battery manufacturing hub, with potential expansion into 24-volt and 48-volt battery module production.
