Talos Energy (NYSE:TALO) Sheds 7.6% This Week, as Yearly Returns Fall More in Line With Earnings Growth

Simply Wall St ·  Oct 8, 2023 08:24

Talos Energy Inc. (NYSE:TALO) shareholders have seen the share price descend 10% over the month. In contrast, the return over three years has been impressive. In fact, the share price is up a full 119% compared to three years ago. It's not uncommon to see a share price retrace a bit, after a big gain. The fundamental business performance will ultimately dictate whether the top is in, or if this is a stellar buying opportunity.

Since the long term performance has been good but there's been a recent pullback of 7.6%, let's check if the fundamentals match the share price.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Talos Energy was able to grow its EPS at 23% per year over three years, sending the share price higher. In comparison, the 30% per year gain in the share price outpaces the EPS growth. This suggests that, as the business progressed over the last few years, it gained the confidence of market participants. It's not unusual to see the market 're-rate' a stock, after a few years of growth.

A Different Perspective

Talos Energy shareholders are down 29% for the year, but the market itself is up 18%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 9% over the last half decade. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Talos Energy better, we need to consider many other factors. Even so, be aware that Talos Energy is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those is a bit unpleasant...
