Investors can approximate the average market return by buying an index fund. But if you buy individual stocks, you can do both better or worse than that. For example, the Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport Company Limited (SHSE:600004) share price is down 22% in the last year. That falls noticeably short of the market decline of around 3.2%. Taking the longer term view, the stock fell 20% over the last three years. Furthermore, it's down 22% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders.

After losing 4.2% this past week, it's worth investigating the company's fundamentals to see what we can infer from past performance.

Because Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport grew its revenue by 0.2% over the last year. That's not a very high growth rate considering it doesn't make profits. Given this lacklustre revenue growth, the share price drop of 22% seems pretty appropriate. It's important not to lose sight of the fact that profitless companies must grow. So remember, if you buy a profitless company then you risk being a profitless investor.

It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. But while CEO remuneration is always worth checking, the really important question is whether the company can grow earnings going forward. A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 3.2% in the twelve months, Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport shareholders did even worse, losing 22%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 0.2% per year over five years.
