Insiders At Polaris Sold US$2.7m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness

The fact that multiple Polaris Inc. (NYSE:PII) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying versus if they selling is usually more beneficial, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Polaris

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the CEO & Director, Michael Speetzen, sold US$2.0m worth of shares at a price of US$138 per share. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. It's of some comfort that this sale was conducted at a price well above the current share price, which is US$86.85. So it may not shed much light on insider confidence at current levels.

Does Polaris Boast High Insider Ownership?

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. We usually like to see fairly high levels of insider ownership. It appears that Polaris insiders own 0.5% of the company, worth about US$26m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.

So What Do The Polaris Insider Transactions Indicate?

The fact that there have been no Polaris insider transactions recently certainly doesn't bother us. We don't take much encouragement from the transactions by Polaris insiders.
