Unicharm invests in U.S. forest business operated by Sumitomo Forestry Group
-Utilizing to promote the medium- to long-term ESG target “Kyo-sei Life Vision 2030” ~
Unicharm Co., Ltd. (President and CEO: Takehisa Takahara) is pleased to announce that the Sumitomo Forestry Group has decided to participate in the forest fund “Eastwood Climate Smart Forestry Fund I,” which aims to be formed in the US in 2023/6.
About the forest fund “Eastwood Climate Smart Forestry Fund I”
This fund will be used by the Sumitomo Forestry Group to purchase and manage forests through investment from participating companies, including our company. The aim is to contribute to the carbon offset of society as a whole by returning profits obtained from timber sales, etc. and carbon credits generated from forests to invested companies.
Background that led to the investment
We have defined “contributing to the achievement of SDGs” as our purpose (meaning of existence), and we aim to solve environmental and social issues and contribute to local communities through our business activities. Furthermore, in order to specifically promote these, the medium- to long-term ESG target “Kyo-sei Life Vision 2030” was announced in October 2020, and “climate change response” was set as one of the important issues. To achieve this goal, we are working on “used disposable diaper recycling business,” “efforts to visualize GHG emissions,” and “promotion of product development with lower GHG emissions.”
This time, the fund formed by the Sumitomo Forestry Group advocates contributions to carbon offsets for society as a whole, and it was determined that it is highly compatible with activities related to “climate change response” that we are working on, so we have decided on this investment.
“SDGs 17 Goals” to which we contribute through our investment in the “Eastwood Climate Smart Forestry Fund I”
We believe that investment in this activity will contribute to the following 3 of the 17 goals set out in the “Sustainable Development Goals” (SDGs: Sustainable Development Goals) adopted by the United Nations in 2015.
