In October, the power generation capacity was 704.4 billion kilowatt-hours, an increase of 5.2% over the previous year. The growth rate was 2.5 percentage points slower than in September, and the average daily power generation was 22.72 billion kilowatt-hours. In January-October, the power generation capacity was 7333 billion kilowatt-hours, an increase of 4.4% over the previous year. Furthermore, in October, 390 million tons of raw coal were produced, an increase of 3.8% over the previous year. The growth rate was 3.4 percentage points faster than in September, with an average daily output of 12.54 million tons. The import of coal was 35.99 million tons, up 23.3% year on year, and the growth rate fell 4.5 percentage points from September.

Energy production situation in October 2023

In October, production of major energy products for large-scale industries continued to maintain year-on-year growth. Compared with September, the growth in raw coal and crude oil production has accelerated, while the growth rate of natural gas and electricity production has declined somewhat.

I. Production of raw coal, crude oil and natural gas and related conditions

The growth rate of raw coal production is accelerating, and imports are growing at a relatively rapid pace. In October, 390 million tons of raw coal were produced, up 3.8% year on year. The growth rate was 3.4 percentage points faster than in September, with an average daily output of 12.54 million tons. The import of coal was 35.99 million tons, up 23.3% year on year, and the growth rate fell 4.5 percentage points from September.

From January to October, 3.83 billion tons of raw coal were produced, an increase of 3.1% over the previous year. Imported 380 million tons of coal, an increase of 66.8% over the previous year.

The growth rate of crude oil production has accelerated slightly, and imports have maintained a relatively rapid growth rate. In October, 17.33 million tons of crude oil were produced, up 0.5% year on year. The growth rate was 0.2 percentage points faster than in September, with an average daily output of 559,000 tons. The imported crude oil was 48.97 million tons, up 13.5% year on year, and the growth rate was 0.2 percentage points slower than in September.

From January to October, 174.05 million tons of crude oil were produced, an increase of 1.7% over the previous year. Crude oil was imported to 473.22 million tons, an increase of 14.4% over the previous year.

Crude oil processing has maintained steady growth. In October, 63.93 million tons of crude oil were processed, an increase of 9.1% over the previous year. The growth rate was 2.9 percentage points slower than in September, with an average daily processing of 2,062 million tons of crude oil. From January to October, 618.76 million tons of crude oil were processed, an increase of 11.2% over the previous year.

Natural gas production has remained stable, and the growth rate of imports has accelerated. In October, 19 billion cubic meters of natural gas were produced, up 2.6% year on year. The growth rate fell 6.7 percentage points from September, with an average daily output of 610 million cubic meters. 8.79 million tons of natural gas were imported, an increase of 15.5% over the previous year, and the growth rate was 15.1 percentage points faster than in September.

From January to October, 189.6 billion cubic meters of natural gas were produced, an increase of 6.1% over the previous year. The import of natural gas was 96.51 million tons, an increase of 8.8% over the previous year.

II. Electricity production situation

Electricity production is growing steadily. In October, the power generation capacity was 704.4 billion kilowatt-hours, an increase of 5.2% over the previous year. The growth rate was 2.5 percentage points slower than in September, and the average daily power generation was 22.72 billion kilowatt-hours. From January to October, the power generation capacity was 7333 billion kilowatt-hours, an increase of 4.4% over the previous year.

By type, in October, the growth rate of thermal power and solar power generation accelerated, the growth rate of hydropower declined, nuclear power increased to decline, and the decline in wind power increased. Among them, thermal power grew by 4.0%, 1.7 percentage points faster than in September; hydropower grew by 21.8%, down 17.4 percentage points from September; nuclear power fell 0.2%, and the growth rate in September was 6.7%; wind power fell 13.1%, the decline was 11.5 percentage points higher than in September; and solar power grew 15.3%, 8.5 percentage points faster than in September.
