Powerlong Real Estate Holdings (HKG:1238) Adds HK$662m to Market Cap in the Past 7 Days, Though Investors From Three Years Ago Are Still Down 81%

Powerlong Real Estate Holdings Limited (HKG:1238) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 21% in the last week. But only the myopic could ignore the astounding decline over three years. Indeed, the share price is down a whopping 84% in the last three years. So it's about time shareholders saw some gains. The thing to think about is whether the business has really turned around. While a drop like that is definitely a body blow, money isn't as important as health and happiness.

While the stock has risen 21% in the past week but long term shareholders are still in the red, let's see what the fundamentals can tell us.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Over the three years that the share price declined, Powerlong Real Estate Holdings' earnings per share (EPS) dropped significantly, falling to a loss. Extraordinary items contributed to this situation. Due to the loss, it's not easy to use EPS as a reliable guide to the business. However, we can say we'd expect to see a falling share price in this scenario.

A Dividend Lost

The value of past dividends are accounted for in the total shareholder return (TSR), but not in the share price return mentioned above. Many would argue the TSR gives a more complete picture of the value a stock brings to its holders. Powerlong Real Estate Holdings' TSR over the last 3 years is -81%; better than its share price return. Although the company had to cut dividends, it has paid cash to shareholders in the past.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 5.1% in the last year, Powerlong Real Estate Holdings shareholders lost 16%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Unfortunately, longer term shareholders are suffering worse, given the loss of 10% doled out over the last five years. We'd need to see some sustained improvements in the key metrics before we could muster much enthusiasm. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. For example, we've discovered 3 warning signs for Powerlong Real Estate Holdings (2 shouldn't be ignored!) that you should be aware of before investing here.
