ChatGPT推出一年 提示语工程师仍然抢手

One year since ChatGPT was launched, a reminder that engineers are still in demand

In the year since ChatGPT was introduced to the public, there has been endless speculation about jobs that might be eliminated by artificial intelligence, but at least one new skill that can earn a high income and show some endurance has appeared: prompt design.

Compared to a year ago, there has been an order of magnitude increase in Google searches for this term. It refers to the art of using keywords to make AI tools generate better images and written responses. LinkedIn said in its November “Future of Work” (Future of Work) report, “prompt design” and “prompt production” have “increased significantly” the number of times “prompt design” and “prompt production” appear in member profiles.

Justin Farris (Justin Farris), senior director of product management at software development platform GitLab, said, “One joke I've heard this year is that the most popular programming language in 2023 is English.”

Reminder The rise of design jobs highlights another way AI is reshaping the job market — not only eliminating jobs, but also making employees who are good at using and integrating artificial intelligence services to complete work tasks receive more attention. However, like all AI things, this technology is rapidly evolving, and it is likely that one day it will replace these employees as well. For example, in October, OpenAI launched the latest version of Dall-e, an image generator, and said it had improved enough to reduce the need for “learning prompt design.”

Faris expressed optimism that message design will be a short-term skill. He said, “After 12 months, I think more people will be using it. We're still very early. Everyone in the tech world is talking about it, yet it hasn't crossed the threshold that everyone else can use it.”

In March of this year, it was reported that the annual salary of newly established reminder design positions can reach 335,000 US dollars or more. The role of the practitioners is to induce the AI system to produce better results, or help the company train employees to make good use of this technology.

“The reason these people get paid so well is because they also have expertise in their fields,” Faris said. He compared this skill set to someone who is proficient in applications such as Microsoft Excel, who also has a deep understanding of the disciplines behind entering numbers and formulas into electronic forms.

Faris has several suggestions for individuals interested in becoming prompt engineers or making better use of AI at work. This includes learning to iterate with tools like ChatGPT — and being patient.

“Talk to these systems and send them more data,” he said. “You have to rely on the tenth query to get the results you want, not the first time. Because when you do this, you'll provide the model with lots of background information and understanding of the field, which will help produce better results in the future. And the first time you search, you probably won't be able to get such results.”
