If you buy and hold a stock for many years, you'd hope to be making a profit. Furthermore, you'd generally like to see the share price rise faster than the market. But Stepan Company (NYSE:SCL) has fallen short of that second goal, with a share price rise of 28% over five years, which is below the market return. Zooming in, the stock is actually down 13% in the last year.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During five years of share price growth, Stepan actually saw its EPS drop 11% per year.

This means it's unlikely the market is judging the company based on earnings growth. Because earnings per share don't seem to match up with the share price, we'll take a look at other metrics instead.

We doubt the modest 1.6% dividend yield is attracting many buyers to the stock. On the other hand, Stepan's revenue is growing nicely, at a compound rate of 8.5% over the last five years. In that case, the company may be sacrificing current earnings per share to drive growth.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for Stepan the TSR over the last 5 years was 36%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

Investors in Stepan had a tough year, with a total loss of 11% (including dividends), against a market gain of about 24%. Even the share prices of good stocks drop sometimes, but we want to see improvements in the fundamental metrics of a business, before getting too interested. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 6%, each year, over five years. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Stepan better, we need to consider many other factors. Case in point: We've spotted 3 warning signs for Stepan you should be aware of.
