Possible Bearish Signals With MYR Group Insiders Disposing Stock

Simply Wall St ·  Dec 18, 2023 08:13

Many MYR Group Inc. (NASDAQ:MYRG) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying versus if they selling is usually more beneficial, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At MYR Group

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Senior VP and COO of Transmission & Distribution, Tod Cooper, sold US$2.9m worth of shares at a price of US$119 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$149. We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. It is worth noting that this sale was 54% of Tod Cooper's holding.

In the last year MYR Group insiders didn't buy any company stock. You can see the insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last year depicted in the chart below. Does MYR Group Boast High Insider Ownership?

Another way to test the alignment between the leaders of a company and other shareholders is to look at how many shares they own. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Insiders own 2.0% of MYR Group shares, worth about US$51m. We've certainly seen higher levels of insider ownership elsewhere, but these holdings are enough to suggest alignment between insiders and the other shareholders.
