Investors Aren't Buying Cinda Real Estate Co., Ltd.'s (SHSE:600657) Earnings

Simply Wall St ·  Dec 21, 2023 10:17

When close to half the companies in China have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 35x, you may consider Cinda Real Estate Co., Ltd. (SHSE:600657) as an attractive investment with its 29.2x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

As an illustration, earnings have deteriorated at Cinda Real Estate over the last year, which is not ideal at all. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think the company won't do enough to avoid underperforming the broader market in the near future. However, if this doesn't eventuate then existing shareholders may be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

What Are Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/E?

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Cinda Real Estate would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.

Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 51%. This means it has also seen a slide in earnings over the longer-term as EPS is down 87% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.

In contrast to the company, the rest of the market is expected to grow by 44% over the next year, which really puts the company's recent medium-term earnings decline into perspective.

With this information, we are not surprised that Cinda Real Estate is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as recent earnings trends are already weighing down the shares.

The Bottom Line On Cinda Real Estate's P/E

It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

As we suspected, our examination of Cinda Real Estate revealed its shrinking earnings over the medium-term are contributing to its low P/E, given the market is set to grow. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price moving strongly in either direction in the near future under these circumstances.
