Productive Technologies Company Limited's (HKG:650) Stock Retreats 32% But Revenues Haven't Escaped The Attention Of Investors

Simply Wall St ·  Dec 22, 2023 07:53

Productive Technologies Company Limited (HKG:650) shares have retraced a considerable 32% in the last month, reversing a fair amount of their solid recent performance. The recent drop completes a disastrous twelve months for shareholders, who are sitting on a 58% loss during that time.

Even after such a large drop in price, given around half the companies in Hong Kong's Oil and Gas industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 1x, you may still consider Productive Technologies as a stock to avoid entirely with its 6.7x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.

How Productive Technologies Has Been Performing

As an illustration, revenue has deteriorated at Productive Technologies over the last year, which is not ideal at all. One possibility is that the P/S is high because investors think the company will still do enough to outperform the broader industry in the near future. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Productive Technologies' earnings, revenue and cash flow.

Is There Enough Revenue Growth Forecasted For Productive Technologies?

Productive Technologies' P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the industry.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 6.9%. Even so, admirably revenue has lifted 135% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.

When compared to the industry's one-year growth forecast of 1.0%, the most recent medium-term revenue trajectory is noticeably more alluring

With this information, we can see why Productive Technologies is trading at such a high P/S compared to the industry. It seems most investors are expecting this strong growth to continue and are willing to pay more for the stock.

The Final Word

Even after such a strong price drop, Productive Technologies' P/S still exceeds the industry median significantly. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We've established that Productive Technologies maintains its high P/S on the strength of its recent three-year growth being higher than the wider industry forecast, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/S as they are quite confident revenue aren't under threat. Unless the recent medium-term conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
