Possible Bearish Signals With Standex International Insiders Disposing Stock

Simply Wall St ·  Jan 3 18:55

In the last year, many Standex International Corporation (NYSE:SXI) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying versus if they selling is usually more beneficial, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

Standex International Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the insider, Paul Burns, sold US$507k worth of shares at a price of US$117 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (US$154). We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. This single sale was just 24% of Paul Burns's stake.

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. Standex International insiders own about US$45m worth of shares. That equates to 2.5% of the company. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.

An insider sold stock recently, but they haven't been buying. And there weren't any purchases to give us comfort, over the last year. But since Standex International is profitable and growing, we're not too worried by this. Insiders own shares, but we're still pretty cautious, given the history of sales. We're in no rush to buy!
