Possible Bearish Signals With WaFd Insiders Disposing Stock

Possible Bearish Signals With WaFd Insiders Disposing Stock

Simply Wall St ·  01/17 08:59

In the last year, many WaFd, Inc (NASDAQ:WAFD) insiders sold a substantial stake in the company which may have sparked shareholders' attention. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we do think it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing.

WaFd Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Executive VP, Cathy Cooper, for US$514k worth of shares, at about US$34.25 per share. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. The silver lining is that this sell-down took place above the latest price (US$30.25). So it is hard to draw any strong conclusion from it.

Over the last year, we can see that insiders have bought 20.10k shares worth US$532k. But they sold 28.69k shares for US$984k. In total, WaFd insiders sold more than they bought over the last year. You can see a visual depiction of insider transactions (by companies and individuals) over the last 12 months, below. By clicking on the graph below, you can see the precise details of each insider transaction!

Insider Ownership

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It appears that WaFd insiders own 1.7% of the company, worth about US$34m. While this is a strong but not outstanding level of insider ownership, it's enough to indicate some alignment between management and smaller shareholders.
