Investors Give Beyondsoft Corporation (SZSE:002649) Shares A 26% Hiding

Beyondsoft Corporation (SZSE:002649) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 26% share price drop in the last month. The drop over the last 30 days has capped off a tough year for shareholders, with the share price down 25% in that time.

Following the heavy fall in price, Beyondsoft may be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 20.8x, since almost half of all companies in China have P/E ratios greater than 30x and even P/E's higher than 54x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

Beyondsoft has been struggling lately as its earnings have declined faster than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the dismal earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. You'd much rather the company wasn't bleeding earnings if you still believe in the business. Or at the very least, you'd be hoping the earnings slide doesn't get any worse if your plan is to pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

How Is Beyondsoft's Growth Trending?

Beyondsoft's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 35% decrease to the company's bottom line. This means it has also seen a slide in earnings over the longer-term as EPS is down 14% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been undesirable for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 57% as estimated by the dual analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 42% growth forecast for the broader market.

In light of this, it's peculiar that Beyondsoft's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently some shareholders are doubtful of the forecasts and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

What We Can Learn From Beyondsoft's P/E?

The softening of Beyondsoft's shares means its P/E is now sitting at a pretty low level. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

Our examination of Beyondsoft's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the positive outlook. It appears many are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.

And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 2 warning signs for Beyondsoft you should know about.
