Investors Don't See Light At End Of Hubei Century Network Technology Inc.'s (SZSE:300494) Tunnel And Push Stock Down 29%

Simply Wall St ·  Feb 5 17:36

Hubei Century Network Technology Inc. (SZSE:300494) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 29% share price drop in the last month. Longer-term, the stock has been solid despite a difficult 30 days, gaining 22% in the last year.

After such a large drop in price, Hubei Century Network Technology may be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 21.5x, since almost half of all companies in China have P/E ratios greater than 27x and even P/E's higher than 48x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

With its earnings growth in positive territory compared to the declining earnings of most other companies, Hubei Century Network Technology has been doing quite well of late. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think the company's earnings are going to fall away like everyone else's soon. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Keen to find out how analysts think Hubei Century Network Technology's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

Hubei Century Network Technology's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 37% gain to the company's bottom line. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 189% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the one analyst covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 14% per year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 22% per annum, which is noticeably more attractive.

In light of this, it's understandable that Hubei Century Network Technology's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

The Bottom Line On Hubei Century Network Technology's P/E

The softening of Hubei Century Network Technology's shares means its P/E is now sitting at a pretty low level. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of Hubei Century Network Technology's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook is contributing to its low P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
