Donnelley Financial Solutions' (NYSE:DFIN) 31% CAGR Outpaced the Company's Earnings Growth Over the Same Five-year Period

Simply Wall St ·  Feb 12 08:04

When you buy shares in a company, it's worth keeping in mind the possibility that it could fail, and you could lose your money. But on the bright side, you can make far more than 100% on a really good stock. Long term Donnelley Financial Solutions, Inc. (NYSE:DFIN) shareholders would be well aware of this, since the stock is up 292% in five years. On top of that, the share price is up 15% in about a quarter. But this move may well have been assisted by the reasonably buoyant market (up 15% in 90 days).

After a strong gain in the past week, it's worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During five years of share price growth, Donnelley Financial Solutions achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 13% per year. This EPS growth is lower than the 31% average annual increase in the share price. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did five years ago. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth.
