When you see that almost half of the companies in the Life Sciences industry in the United States have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 3.8x, Repligen Corporation (NASDAQ:RGEN) looks to be giving off strong sell signals with its 16.8x P/S ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.
What Does Repligen's Recent Performance Look Like?
Repligen has been struggling lately as its revenue has declined faster than most other companies. It might be that many expect the dismal revenue performance to recover substantially, which has kept the P/S from collapsing. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Repligen would need to produce outstanding growth that's well in excess of the industry.
In reviewing the last year of financials, we were disheartened to see the company's revenues fell to the tune of 20%. Even so, admirably revenue has lifted 74% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the revenue growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the eleven analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 11% each year over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to only expand by 6.5% each year, which is noticeably less attractive.
With this in mind, it's not hard to understand why Repligen's P/S is high relative to its industry peers. It seems most investors are expecting this strong future growth and are willing to pay more for the stock.
The Key Takeaway
Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that Repligen maintains its high P/S on the strength of its forecasted revenue growth being higher than the the rest of the Life Sciences industry, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in revenues is quite remote, justifying the elevated P/S ratio. Unless the analysts have really missed the mark, these strong revenue forecasts should keep the share price buoyant.
