Sinomine Resource Group Co., Ltd.'s (SZSE:002738) Shares Bounce 32% But Its Business Still Trails The Market

Simply Wall St ·  Mar 6 15:12

Sinomine Resource Group Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002738) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 32% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 31% over that time.

Although its price has surged higher, given about half the companies in China have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 30x, you may still consider Sinomine Resource Group as a highly attractive investment with its 7.9x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so limited.

Recent times have been pleasing for Sinomine Resource Group as its earnings have risen in spite of the market's earnings going into reverse. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think the company's earnings are going to fall away like everyone else's soon. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Growth For Sinomine Resource Group?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far underperform the market for P/E ratios like Sinomine Resource Group's to be considered reasonable.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 33% last year. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 2,067% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.

Turning to the outlook, the next year should generate growth of 0.9% as estimated by the nine analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 41% growth forecast for the broader market.

In light of this, it's understandable that Sinomine Resource Group's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.

The Final Word

Even after such a strong price move, Sinomine Resource Group's P/E still trails the rest of the market significantly. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

We've established that Sinomine Resource Group maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider market, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.

And what about other risks? Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Sinomine Resource Group (of which 1 makes us a bit uncomfortable!) you should know about.

Of course, you might find a fantastic investment by looking at a few good candidates. So take a peek at this free list of companies with a strong growth track record, trading on a low P/E.
