Further Upside For Acrel Co.,Ltd. (SZSE:300286) Shares Could Introduce Price Risks After 28% Bounce

Simply Wall St ·  Mar 16 20:20

Acrel Co.,Ltd. (SZSE:300286) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 28% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 40% over that time.

Although its price has surged higher, AcrelLtd's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 23.3x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in China, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 32x and even P/E's above 58x are quite common. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

AcrelLtd certainly has been doing a good job lately as its earnings growth has been positive while most other companies have been seeing their earnings go backwards. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, possibly more than the market, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Is There Any Growth For AcrelLtd?

AcrelLtd's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.

If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 16%. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 50% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the two analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 44% over the next year. That's shaping up to be similar to the 41% growth forecast for the broader market.

In light of this, it's peculiar that AcrelLtd's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can achieve future growth expectations.

What We Can Learn From AcrelLtd's P/E?

Despite AcrelLtd's shares building up a head of steam, its P/E still lags most other companies. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

We've established that AcrelLtd currently trades on a lower than expected P/E since its forecast growth is in line with the wider market. There could be some unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching the outlook. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued, but investors seem to think future earnings could see some volatility.
