While Shareholders of LanZhou Foci PharmaceuticalLtd (SZSE:002644) Are in the Red Over the Last Year, Underlying Earnings Have Actually Grown

LanZhou Foci Pharmaceutical Co.,Ltd. (SZSE:002644) shareholders should be happy to see the share price up 20% in the last month. But that doesn't change the reality of under-performance over the last twelve months. In fact the stock is down 28% in the last year, well below the market return.

Although the past week has been more reassuring for shareholders, they're still in the red over the last year, so let's see if the underlying business has been responsible for the decline.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During the unfortunate twelve months during which the LanZhou Foci PharmaceuticalLtd share price fell, it actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) improve by 49%. It could be that the share price was previously over-hyped.

It's surprising to see the share price fall so much, despite the improved EPS. So it's easy to justify a look at some other metrics.

With a low yield of 0.6% we doubt that the dividend influences the share price much. LanZhou Foci PharmaceuticalLtd managed to grow revenue over the last year, which is usually a real positive. Since the fundamental metrics don't readily explain the share price drop, there might be an opportunity if the market has overreacted.

It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 11% in the twelve months, LanZhou Foci PharmaceuticalLtd shareholders did even worse, losing 27% (even including dividends). However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 0.9% per year over five years.
