Chengdu Yunda Technology Co., Ltd. (SZSE:300440) Surges 29% Yet Its Low P/S Is No Reason For Excitement

Simply Wall St ·  Mar 17 20:21

Chengdu Yunda Technology Co., Ltd. (SZSE:300440) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 29% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 18% over that time.

Even after such a large jump in price, Chengdu Yunda Technology's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.8x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the Electronic industry in China, where around half of the companies have P/S ratios above 4x and even P/S above 7x are quite common. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Chengdu Yunda Technology's Recent Performance Look Like?

Chengdu Yunda Technology has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing revenue at a solid pace. Perhaps the market is expecting this acceptable revenue performance to take a dive, which has kept the P/S suppressed. Those who are bullish on Chengdu Yunda Technology will be hoping that this isn't the case, so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Chengdu Yunda Technology's earnings, revenue and cash flow.

How Is Chengdu Yunda Technology's Revenue Growth Trending?

Chengdu Yunda Technology's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.

If we review the last year of revenue growth, the company posted a worthy increase of 9.0%. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 34% overall rise in revenue, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.

Comparing that to the industry, which is predicted to deliver 25% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is weaker, based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.

In light of this, it's understandable that Chengdu Yunda Technology's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the wider industry.

What Does Chengdu Yunda Technology's P/S Mean For Investors?

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Chengdu Yunda Technology's P/S close to the industry median. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of Chengdu Yunda Technology revealed its three-year revenue trends are contributing to its low P/S, given they look worse than current industry expectations. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in revenue isn't great enough to justify a higher P/S ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
