Generally speaking the aim of active stock picking is to find companies that provide returns that are superior to the market average. And while active stock picking involves risks (and requires diversification) it can also provide excess returns. For example, the Jushri Technologies, INC. (SZSE:300762) share price is up 35% in the last 5 years, clearly besting the market return of around 3.1% (ignoring dividends). However, more recent returns haven't been as impressive as that, with the stock returning just 9.2% in the last year , including dividends .

Since the stock has added CN¥1.1b to its market cap in the past week alone, let's see if underlying performance has been driving long-term returns.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During five years of share price growth, Jushri Technologies actually saw its EPS drop 8.9% per year.

Essentially, it doesn't seem likely that investors are focused on EPS. Since the change in EPS doesn't seem to correlate with the change in share price, it's worth taking a look at other metrics.

We doubt the modest 0.09% dividend yield is attracting many buyers to the stock. The revenue reduction of 0.6% per year is not a positive. So it seems one might have to take closer look at earnings and revenue trends to see how they might influence the share price.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Jushri Technologies shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 9.2% over the last year. And that does include the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 6% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
