Optimism for Harbin VITI Electronics (SHSE:603023) Has Grown This Past Week, Despite Three-year Decline in Earnings

Simply Wall St ·  Mar 21 19:42

One simple way to benefit from the stock market is to buy an index fund. But many of us dare to dream of bigger returns, and build a portfolio ourselves. For example, the Harbin VITI Electronics Co., Ltd. (SHSE:603023) share price is up 18% in the last three years, clearly besting the market decline of around 16% (not including dividends).

The past week has proven to be lucrative for Harbin VITI Electronics investors, so let's see if fundamentals drove the company's three-year performance.

We don't think that Harbin VITI Electronics' modest trailing twelve month profit has the market's full attention at the moment. We think revenue is probably a better guide. Generally speaking, we'd consider a stock like this alongside loss-making companies, simply because the quantum of the profit is so low. For shareholders to have confidence a company will grow profits significantly, it must grow revenue.

Harbin VITI Electronics actually saw its revenue drop by 4.0% per year over three years. The revenue growth might be lacking but the share price has gained 6% each year in that time. Unless the company is going to make profits soon, we would be pretty cautious about it.

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Harbin VITI Electronics shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 18% over the last year. Of course, that includes the dividend. That's better than the annualised return of 4% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
