While Shareholders of Jilin Electric PowerLtd (SZSE:000875) Are in the Black Over 5 Years, Those Who Bought a Week Ago Aren't so Fortunate

Stock pickers are generally looking for stocks that will outperform the broader market. And in our experience, buying the right stocks can give your wealth a significant boost. For example, long term Jilin Electric Power Co.,Ltd. (SZSE:000875) shareholders have enjoyed a 34% share price rise over the last half decade, well in excess of the market return of around 3.1% (not including dividends).

Although Jilin Electric PowerLtd has shed CN¥614m from its market cap this week, let's take a look at its longer term fundamental trends and see if they've driven returns.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

During the last half decade, Jilin Electric PowerLtd became profitable. That would generally be considered a positive, so we'd hope to see the share price to rise. Given that the company made a profit three years ago, but not five years ago, it is worth looking at the share price returns over the last three years, too. We can see that the Jilin Electric PowerLtd share price is down 17% in the last three years. In the same period, EPS is up 36% per year. So there seems to be a mismatch between the positive EPS growth and the change in the share price, which is down -6% per year.

The graphic below depicts how EPS has changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image).

It is of course excellent to see how Jilin Electric PowerLtd has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. You can see how its balance sheet has strengthened (or weakened) over time in this free interactive graphic.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. We note that for Jilin Electric PowerLtd the TSR over the last 5 years was 37%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

We regret to report that Jilin Electric PowerLtd shareholders are down 23% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 13%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 6% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Jilin Electric PowerLtd better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 2 warning signs with Jilin Electric PowerLtd (at least 1 which is a bit concerning) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
