Possible Bearish Signals With Chord Energy Insiders Disposing Stock

Simply Wall St ·  Mar 26 15:39

The fact that multiple Chord Energy Corporation (NASDAQ:CHRD) insiders offloaded a considerable amount of shares over the past year could have raised some eyebrows amongst investors. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying versus if they selling is usually more beneficial, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, if numerous insiders are selling, shareholders should investigate more.

While we would never suggest that investors should base their decisions solely on what the directors of a company have been doing, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.

Chord Energy Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

The Executive VP, Michael Lou, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for US$1.2m worth of shares at a price of US$161 each. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (US$172). We generally consider it a negative if insiders have been selling, especially if they did so below the current price, because it implies that they considered a lower price to be reasonable. While insider selling is not a positive sign, we can't be sure if it does mean insiders think the shares are fully valued, so it's only a weak sign. We note that the biggest single sale was only 3.9% of Michael Lou's holding.

Does Chord Energy Boast High Insider Ownership?

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It appears that Chord Energy insiders own 0.7% of the company, worth about US$50m. This level of insider ownership is good but just short of being particularly stand-out. It certainly does suggest a reasonable degree of alignment.
