Grinm Advanced Materials (SHSE:600206) Shareholders Have Lost 26% Over 1 Year, Earnings Decline Likely the Culprit

Simply Wall St ·  Mar 28 20:26

It's easy to match the overall market return by buying an index fund. While individual stocks can be big winners, plenty more fail to generate satisfactory returns. Investors in Grinm Advanced Materials Co., Ltd. (SHSE:600206) have tasted that bitter downside in the last year, as the share price dropped 27%. That falls noticeably short of the market decline of around 15%. At least the damage isn't so bad if you look at the last three years, since the stock is down 4.1% in that time. The falls have accelerated recently, with the share price down 11% in the last three months.

With the stock having lost 5.3% in the past week, it's worth taking a look at business performance and seeing if there's any red flags.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Unhappily, Grinm Advanced Materials had to report a 52% decline in EPS over the last year. The share price fall of 27% isn't as bad as the reduction in earnings per share. So the market may not be too worried about the EPS figure, at the moment -- or it may have expected earnings to drop faster. Indeed, with a P/E ratio of 62.03 there is obviously some real optimism that earnings will bounce back.

You can see how EPS has changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

We're pleased to report that the CEO is remunerated more modestly than most CEOs at similarly capitalized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. It might be well worthwhile taking a look at our free report on Grinm Advanced Materials' earnings, revenue and cash flow.

A Different Perspective

We regret to report that Grinm Advanced Materials shareholders are down 26% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 15%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 3%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider risks, for instance. Every company has them, and we've spotted 3 warning signs for Grinm Advanced Materials you should know about.
