Further Weakness as Shenzhen Fenda Technology (SZSE:002681) Drops 4.2% This Week, Taking Three-year Losses to 13%

One of the frustrations of investing is when a stock goes down. But no-one can make money on every call, especially in a declining market. The Shenzhen Fenda Technology Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002681) share price is down 13% in the last three years. On the bright side, that's better than the market decline of 17%.

Given the past week has been tough on shareholders, let's investigate the fundamentals and see what we can learn.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Shenzhen Fenda Technology became profitable within the last five years. We would usually expect to see the share price rise as a result. So given the share price is down it's worth checking some other metrics too.

We think that the revenue decline over three years, at a rate of 10% per year, probably had some shareholders looking to sell. And that's not surprising, since it seems unlikely that EPS growth can continue for long in the absence of revenue growth.

The image below shows how earnings and revenue have tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Shenzhen Fenda Technology shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 8.2% over the last year. That certainly beats the loss of about 2% per year over the last half decade. We generally put more weight on the long term performance over the short term, but the recent improvement could hint at a (positive) inflection point within the business.
