Celanese Corporation's (NYSE:CE) Business And Shares Still Trailing The Market

Simply Wall St ·  Apr 6 22:55

When close to half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 18x, you may consider Celanese Corporation (NYSE:CE) as an attractive investment with its 9.2x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

Celanese certainly has been doing a good job lately as its earnings growth has been positive while most other companies have been seeing their earnings go backwards. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think the company's earnings are going to fall away like everyone else's soon. If not, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Growth For Celanese?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Celanese's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 3.1% gain to the company's bottom line. However, due to its less than impressive performance prior to this period, EPS growth is practically non-existent over the last three years overall. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should bring diminished returns, with earnings decreasing 9.7% per year as estimated by the analysts watching the company. With the market predicted to deliver 10% growth each year, that's a disappointing outcome.

In light of this, it's understandable that Celanese's P/E would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. There's potential for the P/E to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its profitability.

The Final Word

It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

We've established that Celanese maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast for sliding earnings, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.

Don't forget that there may be other risks. For instance, we've identified 3 warning signs for Celanese (2 are a bit concerning) you should be aware of.
