Time To Worry? Analysts Are Downgrading Their Jizhong Energy Resources Co., Ltd. (SZSE:000937) Outlook

Simply Wall St ·  Apr 20 22:26

One thing we could say about the analysts on Jizhong Energy Resources Co., Ltd. (SZSE:000937) - they aren't optimistic, having just made a major negative revision to their near-term (statutory) forecasts for the organization. Both revenue and earnings per share (EPS) forecasts went under the knife, suggesting analysts have soured majorly on the business. Shares are up 6.3% to CN¥8.43 in the past week. We'd be curious to see if the downgrade is enough to reverse investor sentiment on the business.

Following the downgrade, the current consensus from Jizhong Energy Resources' twin analysts is for revenues of CN¥30b in 2024 which - if met - would reflect a sizeable 23% increase on its sales over the past 12 months. Per-share earnings are expected to rise 5.3% to CN¥1.03. Before this latest update, the analysts had been forecasting revenues of CN¥37b and earnings per share (EPS) of CN¥1.38 in 2024. It looks like analyst sentiment has declined substantially, with a substantial drop in revenue estimates and a pretty serious decline to earnings per share numbers as well.

The average price target climbed 11% to CN¥10.00 despite the reduced earnings forecasts, suggesting that this earnings impact could be a positive for the stock, once it passes.

Looking at the bigger picture now, one of the ways we can make sense of these forecasts is to see how they measure up against both past performance and industry growth estimates. It's clear from the latest estimates that Jizhong Energy Resources' rate of growth is expected to accelerate meaningfully, with the forecast 23% annualised revenue growth to the end of 2024 noticeably faster than its historical growth of 10% p.a. over the past five years. By contrast, our data suggests that other companies (with analyst coverage) in a similar industry are forecast to grow their revenue at 4.2% per year. Factoring in the forecast acceleration in revenue, it's pretty clear that Jizhong Energy Resources is expected to grow much faster than its industry.

The Bottom Line

The most important thing to take away is that analysts cut their earnings per share estimates, expecting a clear decline in business conditions. While analysts did downgrade their revenue estimates, these forecasts still imply revenues will perform better than the wider market. The increasing price target is not intuitively what we would expect to see, given these downgrades, and we'd suggest shareholders revisit their investment thesis before making a decision.

Even so, the longer term trajectory of the business is much more important for the value creation of shareholders. We have analyst estimates for Jizhong Energy Resources going out as far as 2026, and you can see them free on our platform here.
