PJT Partners Inc. (NYSE:PJT) Investors Are Less Pessimistic Than Expected

pjtパートナーズ社 (NYSE:PJT)の投資家は予想よりも悲観的ではありません

When close to half the companies in the United States have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 17x, you may consider PJT Partners Inc. (NYSE:PJT) as a stock to potentially avoid with its 25.8x P/E ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the elevated P/E.

With its earnings growth in positive territory compared to the declining earnings of most other companies, PJT Partners has been doing quite well of late. The P/E is probably high because investors think the company will continue to navigate the broader market headwinds better than most. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Does Growth Match The High P/E?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should outperform the market for P/E ratios like PJT Partners' to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 17% gain to the company's bottom line. Despite this strong recent growth, it's still struggling to catch up as its three-year EPS frustratingly shrank by 20% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.

Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 0.7% per year as estimated by the six analysts watching the company. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 10% per annum growth forecast for the broader market.

In light of this, it's alarming that PJT Partners' P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are hoping for a turnaround in the company's business prospects, but the analyst cohort is not so confident this will happen. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as this level of earnings growth is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.

What We Can Learn From PJT Partners' P/E?

We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.

We've established that PJT Partners currently trades on a much higher than expected P/E since its forecast growth is lower than the wider market. When we see a weak earnings outlook with slower than market growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. Unless these conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.

Don't forget that there may be other risks. For instance, we've identified 2 warning signs for PJT Partners that you should be aware of.
