The One-year Decline in Earnings for Ameris Bancorp NASDAQ:ABCB) Isn't Encouraging, but Shareholders Are Still up 49% Over That Period

Ameris Bancorp(纳斯达克股票代码:ABCB)一年的收益下降并不令人鼓舞,但同期股东仍增长了49%

If you want to compound wealth in the stock market, you can do so by buying an index fund. But investors can boost returns by picking market-beating companies to own shares in. For example, the Ameris Bancorp (NASDAQ:ABCB) share price is up 46% in the last 1 year, clearly besting the market return of around 25% (not including dividends). So that should have shareholders smiling. In contrast, the longer term returns are negative, since the share price is 16% lower than it was three years ago.

While the stock has fallen 4.4% this week, it's worth focusing on the longer term and seeing if the stocks historical returns have been driven by the underlying fundamentals.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During the last year, Ameris Bancorp actually saw its earnings per share drop 13%.

So we don't think that investors are paying too much attention to EPS. Therefore, it seems likely that investors are putting more weight on metrics other than EPS, at the moment.

We doubt the modest 1.3% dividend yield is doing much to support the share price. Revenue was pretty flat year on year, but maybe a closer look at the data can explain the market optimism.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for Ameris Bancorp the TSR over the last 1 year was 49%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence!

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Ameris Bancorp shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 49% over the last year. And that does include the dividend. That's better than the annualised return of 7% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. For example, we've discovered 1 warning sign for Ameris Bancorp that you should be aware of before investing here.
