There's No Escaping Ledman Optoelectronic Co., Ltd.'s (SZSE:300162) Muted Revenues Despite A 47% Share Price Rise

Simply Wall St ·  May 31 20:20

The Ledman Optoelectronic Co., Ltd. (SZSE:300162) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 47%. Notwithstanding the latest gain, the annual share price return of 8.0% isn't as impressive.

Although its price has surged higher, Ledman Optoelectronic may still look like a strong buying opportunity at present with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 2.8x, considering almost half of all companies in the Semiconductor industry in China have P/S ratios greater than 5.8x and even P/S higher than 10x aren't out of the ordinary. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/S.

What Does Ledman Optoelectronic's Recent Performance Look Like?

Revenue has risen firmly for Ledman Optoelectronic recently, which is pleasing to see. One possibility is that the P/S is low because investors think this respectable revenue growth might actually underperform the broader industry in the near future. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

How Is Ledman Optoelectronic's Revenue Growth Trending?

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Ledman Optoelectronic would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 8.2% last year. Pleasingly, revenue has also lifted 31% in aggregate from three years ago, partly thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Therefore, it's fair to say the revenue growth recently has been superb for the company.

Comparing the recent medium-term revenue trends against the industry's one-year growth forecast of 35% shows it's noticeably less attractive.

With this information, we can see why Ledman Optoelectronic is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the wider industry.

What Does Ledman Optoelectronic's P/S Mean For Investors?

Shares in Ledman Optoelectronic have risen appreciably however, its P/S is still subdued. While the price-to-sales ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of revenue expectations.

As we suspected, our examination of Ledman Optoelectronic revealed its three-year revenue trends are contributing to its low P/S, given they look worse than current industry expectations. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
