Market Is Not Liking Shenzhen Feima International Supply Chain's (SZSE:002210) Earnings Decline as Stock Retreats 12% This Week

Simply Wall St ·  Jun 5 22:04

In order to justify the effort of selecting individual stocks, it's worth striving to beat the returns from a market index fund. But in any portfolio, there are likely to be some stocks that fall short of that benchmark. Unfortunately, that's been the case for longer term Shenzhen Feima International Supply Chain Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002210) shareholders, since the share price is down 46% in the last three years, falling well short of the market decline of around 21%. And more recent buyers are having a tough time too, with a drop of 26% in the last year. More recently, the share price has dropped a further 16% in a month.

Given the past week has been tough on shareholders, let's investigate the fundamentals and see what we can learn.

To quote Buffett, 'Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace...' One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Shenzhen Feima International Supply Chain saw its EPS decline at a compound rate of 87% per year, over the last three years. In comparison the 19% compound annual share price decline isn't as bad as the EPS drop-off. So the market may not be too worried about the EPS figure, at the moment -- or it may have previously priced some of the drop in. With a P/E ratio of 169.89, it's fair to say the market sees a brighter future for the business.

A Different Perspective

We regret to report that Shenzhen Feima International Supply Chain shareholders are down 26% for the year. Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 9.6%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. Unfortunately, last year's performance may indicate unresolved challenges, given that it was worse than the annualised loss of 1.5% over the last half decade. We realise that Baron Rothschild has said investors should "buy when there is blood on the streets", but we caution that investors should first be sure they are buying a high quality business. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. Even so, be aware that Shenzhen Feima International Supply Chain is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis , and 1 of those is concerning...
