It's easy to match the overall market return by buying an index fund. While individual stocks can be big winners, plenty more fail to generate satisfactory returns. Investors in Zhanjiang Guolian Aquatic Products Co., Ltd. (SZSE:300094) have tasted that bitter downside in the last year, as the share price dropped 42%. That's disappointing when you consider the market declined 12%. To make matters worse, the returns over three years have also been really disappointing (the share price is 35% lower than three years ago). Furthermore, it's down 19% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders.

After losing 11% this past week, it's worth investigating the company's fundamentals to see what we can infer from past performance.

Zhanjiang Guolian Aquatic Products isn't currently profitable, so most analysts would look to revenue growth to get an idea of how fast the underlying business is growing. Shareholders of unprofitable companies usually desire strong revenue growth. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size.

Zhanjiang Guolian Aquatic Products' revenue didn't grow at all in the last year. In fact, it fell 17%. That's not what investors generally want to see. The stock price has languished lately, falling 42% in a year. That seems pretty reasonable given the lack of both profits and revenue growth. We think most holders must believe revenue growth will improve, or else costs will decline.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 12% in the twelve months, Zhanjiang Guolian Aquatic Products shareholders did even worse, losing 42%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 7% per year over five years. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
