The Nikkei Average fell for the fourth day, closing at 38,626.95 yen (approx. 690 million shares traded) with a decline of 6.07 yen (-0.02%) from the previous day's close in the morning session.

The U.S. stock market was mixed on the 20th. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 39,134.76 (+0.77%), the NASDAQ at 17,721.59 (-0.79%), and the S&P500 at 5,473.17 (-0.25%). Trading was mixed at the opening. The rise in interest rates due to the decrease in initial jobless claims was a dampener, while housing starts and the Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index showed a slowdown in the economy, supporting speculation of a rate cut by the Federal Reserve Board (FRB). The NASDAQ hit an all-time high in the morning but moved sluggishly in the afternoon. Nvidia, which had been rising daily, was sold as the expiration date of stock index futures, stock index options, and single stock options coincided on the 21st, a triple witching day.

The Tokyo market opened slightly on the selling side in response to the decline in U.S. high-tech stocks. The Nikkei Average after the opening temporarily rebounded, but in the absence of positive buying material, it stalled. The TOPIX rose firmly as financial stocks rose due to the rise in interest rates, but the Nikkei Average moved sideways at the previous day's closing level. The trading value of the Prime Market in the morning remained at 1.7 trillion yen.

Among the Nikkei 225 stocks, TDK <6762>, Advantest <6857>, Shin-Etsu Chemical <4063>, Nichia <6988>, and Minebea Mitsumi <6479>, which had been bought, fell due to the decline in the NASDAQ, while Laser Tech <6920> also showed weak movement. In addition, pharmaceutical stocks such as Shionogi & Co. <4507> and Daiichi Sankyo <4568> were sold.

On the other hand, IHI <7013> was bought due to expectations of biomass combustion tests with the Thai Electric Power Authority. Shipping stocks such as Kawasaki Kisen <9107>, Nippon Yusen <9104>, and Nippon Yusen <9101> were also firm. In addition, Sumitomo Pharma <4506>, Otsuka Holdings <4578>, and Shiseido <4911> were bought.

In terms of industries, electric appliances, other financial businesses, metal products, electric/gas businesses, and real estate businesses fell, while marine transportation, insurance, land transportation, mining, and petroleum/coal products rose.

The top decliner was SoftBank G <9984>, which lowered the Nikkei average by about 36 yen with one stock. The second place was taken by Advantest <6857>, with TDK <6762>, Toshiba Electric <8035>, Shin-Etsu Chemical <4063>, Laser Tec <6920>, Nittoden <6988>, etc. following.
