What BYBON Group Company Limited's (SZSE:300736) 40% Share Price Gain Is Not Telling You

Simply Wall St ·  Jun 26 18:58

The BYBON Group Company Limited (SZSE:300736) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 40%. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 83% in the last year.

After such a large jump in price, you could be forgiven for thinking BYBON Group is a stock to steer clear of with a price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") of 3.9x, considering almost half the companies in China's Specialty Retail industry have P/S ratios below 0.8x. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/S.

What Does BYBON Group's Recent Performance Look Like?

With revenue growth that's exceedingly strong of late, BYBON Group has been doing very well. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to outperform the wider market, which has seemingly got people interested in the stock. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

How Is BYBON Group's Revenue Growth Trending?

BYBON Group's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very strong growth, and importantly, perform much better than the industry.

Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 83% last year. As a result, it also grew revenue by 27% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably been satisfied with the medium-term rates of revenue growth.

This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 17% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

With this information, we find it concerning that BYBON Group is trading at a P/S higher than the industry. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with recent growth rates.

The Final Word

Shares in BYBON Group have seen a strong upwards swing lately, which has really helped boost its P/S figure. Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.

The fact that BYBON Group currently trades on a higher P/S relative to the industry is an oddity, since its recent three-year growth is lower than the wider industry forecast. When we observe slower-than-industry revenue growth alongside a high P/S ratio, we assume there to be a significant risk of the share price decreasing, which would result in a lower P/S ratio. Unless there is a significant improvement in the company's medium-term performance, it will be difficult to prevent the P/S ratio from declining to a more reasonable level.

The company's balance sheet is another key area for risk analysis. Take a look at our free balance sheet analysis for BYBON Group with six simple checks on some of these key factors.
