Concerns about inflation re-acceleration subsided after the slowdown in May PCE price index (core), and expectations of Fed rate cuts increased to support the market. However, Nike, a sports goods maker whose earnings were disappointing, weighed down on the Dow and began to fall. It rose after the June Michigan Consumer Confidence Index exceeded expectations. The Nasdaq briefly hit an all-time high, but turned lower after digesting the latest economic indicators, with major stock indices ending slightly lower. Banks, transportation, and other sectors rose. Durable consumer goods and clothing stood out as losers.

The May PCE price index (core) rose 0.1% compared to the previous month, showing the lowest growth since November 2020. Compared to the same month last year, the rise was 2.6%, slower than the previous month, and showed a slight increase since March 2021.
