Wilmington, Delaware, USA, July 4, 2024 / PRNewswire / - At the leading industry event "Augmented World Expo" for XR ecosystem experts and big names, InterDigital (NASDAQ: IDCC), a research and development company specializing in mobile communications, video and artificial intelligence technologies, and Philips demonstrated how their collaboration in volumetric video codec and streaming technologies achieves a brand-new immersive experience for streaming live media or esports.

At the exhibition held in Long Beach, California, InterDigital and Philips jointly demonstrated their immersive technologies, as well as their contributions to video standards, achieving volumetric video rendering and transmission through an"enabling immersive sports experience"lens. The demonstration focused on the partners' expertise in video codecs and volumetric capture technology, enabling cross-platform sharing of scalable XR solutions, especially solutions for immersive sports experiences.

Volumetric video adds depth and parallax to traditional content by capturing the 3D representation of real-world objects or scenes and converting it into a sequence of frames that can be transmitted across devices. Due to the richness of volumetric data, special compression techniques are required for the transmission of this video content, and the MPEG V3C standard defines a common mechanism for volume content encoding and streaming based on visual volumetric video coding.

The InterDigital and Philips collaboration on V3C immersive codecs enhances the transmission capability of volumetric content by leveraging InterDigital's expertise in immersive codecs, including video point cloud compression (V-PCC), haptic and MPEG Immersive Video (MIV) extensions, and Philips' contributions in MIV extension technology and 6 degrees of freedom (6DoF) immersive codec and 3D rendering content creation pipelines.

At the AWE expo, partners demonstrated innovative applications in providing real-time and recorded volumetric video for esports and streaming experiences. InterDigital demonstrated its contributions to the MPEG immersive video, haptic and scene description standard areas, enhancing the flow transmission of volumetric and sensory-enhanced content for recorded esports games, while Philips demonstrated video technology that enables volumetric-enhanced sports streaming content collection and streaming transmission.

InterDigital and Philips jointly emphasized their contributions to the MPEG-1 V3C standard and MPEG-DASH platform, promoting real-time remote rendering and stereoscopic realism, which can be applied to various content experiences.

The partners' V3C implementation solution will soon be incorporated into the 5G-MAG reference tool library hosted by the 5G-MAG media action group in an "early access mode" (see here).

"Advances in video codecs and volumetric streaming technology are opening up new ways of immersive video, especially in the era of audiences enjoying unprecedented streaming sports content." Lionel Oisel, InterDigital vice president and head of the Video Lab, said, "Philips and InterDigital complement each other in volume research and innovation, enabling the mass transmission of clearer and more dynamic immersive content on various devices and use cases."

"Sports clubs and leagues are looking for new ways to attract audiences and increase fans. Immersive and interactive stereoscopic sports content allows fans to control how they watch sporting events and will further enhance the appeal of watching sports on mobile, interactive, and immersive devices." Jako Eleveld, Vice President and Head of Intellectual Property Licensing at Philips, said,"We and InterDigital jointly demonstrated how standards such as MPEG V3C can be used in conjunction with our multi-camera capture and 6DoF rendering technology to achieve this goal in the industry."
