Unisplendour (SZSE:000938) Shareholders Have Endured a 32% Loss From Investing in the Stock a Year Ago

Simply Wall St ·  Jul 4 18:16

Investors can approximate the average market return by buying an index fund. But if you buy individual stocks, you can do both better or worse than that. Unfortunately the Unisplendour Corporation Limited (SZSE:000938) share price slid 32% over twelve months. That falls noticeably short of the market decline of around 17%. However, the longer term returns haven't been so bad, with the stock down 8.3% in the last three years.

Now let's have a look at the company's fundamentals, and see if the long term shareholder return has matched the performance of the underlying business.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

Unhappily, Unisplendour had to report a 6.4% decline in EPS over the last year. This reduction in EPS is not as bad as the 32% share price fall. So it seems the market was too confident about the business, a year ago.

You can see below how EPS has changed over time (discover the exact values by clicking on the image).

A Different Perspective

We regret to report that Unisplendour shareholders are down 32% for the year (even including dividends). Unfortunately, that's worse than the broader market decline of 17%. However, it could simply be that the share price has been impacted by broader market jitters. It might be worth keeping an eye on the fundamentals, in case there's a good opportunity. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 2% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
