Insiders At Align Technology Sold US$8.4m In Stock, Alluding To Potential Weakness

Simply Wall St ·  Jul 11 10:52

Over the past year, many Align Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:ALGN) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, shareholders should take a deeper look if several insiders are selling stock over a specific time period.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

Align Technology Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Independent Director, Joseph Lacob, for US$7.7m worth of shares, at about US$313 per share. We generally don't like to see insider selling, but the lower the sale price, the more it concerns us. The silver lining is that this sell-down took place above the latest price (US$249). So it may not tell us anything about how insiders feel about the current share price.

In total, Align Technology insiders sold more than they bought over the last year. Insider Ownership Of Align Technology

Many investors like to check how much of a company is owned by insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It's great to see that Align Technology insiders own 4.1% of the company, worth about US$755m. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
