Japan Airlines Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo, hereinafter referred to as 'JAL') and ENEOS Corporation (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, hereinafter referred to as 'ENEOS') have signed a contract related to the purchase and sale of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in order to promote the early social implementation of sustainable aviation fuel in Japan. With this contract, ENEOS will become the first domestic petroleum wholesaler to import SAF and supply it to JAL, which is promoting the procurement of SAF domestically and internationally.
In the aviation industry, the goal is to achieve virtually zero CO2 emissions from international airline aircraft by 2050, as set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), and to aim to reduce emissions in the international aviation sector by 15% compared to 2019 levels, starting in 2024. In order to accelerate decarbonization in the aviation industry, it is important to promote the widespread use of domestic SAF. To take the first step toward this goal, both companies have agreed to promote the construction of an SAF supply chain within Japan.
In the future, JAL and ENEOS will continue to work together to promote the widespread use of SAF in Japan, and to jointly promote efforts that contribute to the decarbonization of the aviation industry.
JAL's Approach
In addition to updating to fuel-efficient equipment for decarbonization, JAL is also promoting the procurement of SAF domestically and internationally with the goal of replacing 1% of total fuel volume with SAF by FY2025 and 10% by FY2030. Furthermore, JAL is working to verify the environmental value of CO2 reductions created through the use of SAF and to raise awareness of the environmental value of SAF through the 'JAL Corporate SAF Program,' which provides certification to corporate customers who use JAL flights.
ENEOS's Approach
ENEOS has set the challenge of balancing 'Stable supply of energy and resources' and 'Realization of a carbon-neutral society' in its long-term vision for the group. As part of this effort, ENEOS is promoting the construction of a consistent system from sourcing raw materials for SAF to manufacturing and selling SAF.
ENEOS is currently considering manufacturing SAF at its Wakayama plant.
