Meta (META.US) announced on Friday that it will lift restrictions on former President Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts before the Republican National Convention next week in the United States.
The company stated that this decision is to ensure that Trump, as a Republican presidential candidate, enjoys an equal status with Democratic presidential candidate Biden.
Meta stated in a statement: "In assessing our responsibility to allow political expression, we believe that the American people should hear from presidential candidates on the same basis. Therefore, former President Trump, as a Republican candidate, will no longer be subject to enhanced suspension penalties."
Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts were restored at the beginning of 2023, after being banned for two years following the January 6, 2021 Capitol Hill riots. At that time, Meta stated that additional precautions would be taken on Trump's account to "prevent further violations."
In a January 2023 blog post, Meta wrote: "If Trump posts further violations, the content will be deleted and his account will be suspended for one month to two years, depending on the severity of the violation."
After being suspended by Facebook and Instagram, Trump launched his own social media platform, Truth Social, in 2022.
