Roshow Technology's (SZSE:002617) Earnings Trajectory Could Turn Positive as the Stock Grows 5.5% This Past Week

Simply Wall St ·  Jul 12 20:36

The truth is that if you invest for long enough, you're going to end up with some losing stocks. But the long term shareholders of Roshow Technology Co., Ltd. (SZSE:002617) have had an unfortunate run in the last three years. Unfortunately, they have held through a 65% decline in the share price in that time. And over the last year the share price fell 35%, so we doubt many shareholders are delighted. But it's up 5.5% in the last week.

On a more encouraging note the company has added CN¥496m to its market cap in just the last 7 days, so let's see if we can determine what's driven the three-year loss for shareholders.

To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Roshow Technology became profitable within the last five years. That would generally be considered a positive, so we are surprised to see the share price is down. So it's worth looking at other metrics to try to understand the share price move.

Arguably the revenue decline of 7.8% per year has people thinking Roshow Technology is shrinking. And that's not surprising, since it seems unlikely that EPS growth can continue for long in the absence of revenue growth.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 17% in the twelve months, Roshow Technology shareholders did even worse, losing 35%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 1.3% per year over five years. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround.
