Business First Bancshares (NASDAQ:BFST) Jumps 11% This Week, Though Earnings Growth Is Still Tracking Behind One-year Shareholder Returns

The simplest way to invest in stocks is to buy exchange traded funds. But if you pick the right individual stocks, you could make more than that. For example, the Business First Bancshares, Inc. (NASDAQ:BFST) share price is up 51% in the last 1 year, clearly besting the market return of around 22% (not including dividends). So that should have shareholders smiling. On the other hand, longer term shareholders have had a tougher run, with the stock falling 0.7% in three years.

After a strong gain in the past week, it's worth seeing if longer term returns have been driven by improving fundamentals.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement.

Business First Bancshares was able to grow EPS by 4.4% in the last twelve months. The share price gain of 51% certainly outpaced the EPS growth. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it a year ago.

The image below shows how EPS has tracked over time (if you click on the image you can see greater detail).

What About Dividends?

As well as measuring the share price return, investors should also consider the total shareholder return (TSR). The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for Business First Bancshares the TSR over the last 1 year was 55%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

It's nice to see that Business First Bancshares shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 55% over the last year. That's including the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 0.2% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Business First Bancshares better, we need to consider many other factors. Even so, be aware that Business First Bancshares is showing 1 warning sign in our investment analysis , you should know about...
